The Constitutional Council of Cameroon has begun releasing results for the October 7 Presidential election.

The Council will read out the results of all the regions, divisions and subdivisions of the country and overseas before proclaiming the overall winner of the election.

Incumbent President Paul Biya has taken an early lead with results showing him ahead of his closest opponent Maurice Kamto.

State broadcaster has been live tweeting the release of the results showing Biya in the lead.

Opposition leader Kamato has however beaten Biya in the Littoral Region.

Xinhua is reporting that Justice Clement Atangana, president of the Council, said that the election was “free and fair”, and the Constitutional Council is “satisfied with the results it was announcing.

Last week the constitutional court rejected 18 petitions calling for a re-run of an Oct. 7 election that the opposition said was marred by fraud.
