#UgandaAt56: Uganda to mark 56th independence anniversary
According to Minister for Presidency Esther Mbayo, Uganda has achieved a lot since independence.
“Although the period that followed Uganda’s independence in 1962 was marked by tribal and religious sectarianism, bigotry, chauvinism, state abuse of power and human rights, state and economic collapse, subsequently after close to 20 years of political malaise, a combination of measures was taken to engender national security, peace and stability, democracy as well as socio-economic transformation and no doubt Uganda is now on the right track.”
The Minister says achievements have been registered in infrastructure, agriculture, health, innovation and regional integration among others.
The 56th anniversary of independence is taking place against the backdrop of rampant insecurity, lawlessness, violence unleashed indiscriminately by State operatives against citizens and uncertainty about the future of the country.
Minister Mbayo urged Ugandans to each play their role as government has addressed and will continue addressing all factors that are necessary to open the gates to all those engaged in wealth and jobs creation.
“Let everybody, then, play his or her own part. As we celebrate this auspicious day, we must increase our collective vigilance in the fight against those vices that derail our road to full modernization,” Ms. Mbayo said. “Through combating vices like: corruption in public offices, land fragmentation, environmental degradation, poor service delivery, all forms of sectarianism and tribalism, we will be saying thank you to those who paid the ultimate price to win our independence.”
