CGTN’s Somalia Correspondent Abdulaziz Billow provides an update on the Mogadishu car explosion event:
Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for a deadly car explosion that targeted an administrative headquarters in early Monday morning.
According to accounts, a suicide bomber driving a vehicle laden with explosives detonated in the main entry point of Hodan district headquarters.
Casualty figure remains unknown but the blast destroyed the local government offices and nearby buildings. Al-Shabaab claims to have targeted security personnel and local government workers in the latest blast.
It’s the second deadly attack on a district headquarters in less than a month – just last week Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for a similar attack on the Howlwadaag district headquarters.
Mogadishu is yet to comment on the attack – earlier this week, president Farmajo condemned Al-Shabaab for targeting civilians and places of worship after last week explosion destroyed a mosque near the Howlwadaag district headquarters.
Al-Shabaab’s ever increasing tactics continues to pose a dangerous threat to Somali officials and AMISOM forces.
The group was driven out of Mogadishu in August 2011, seven year ago but continues to launch large scale attacks within the city.
According to Associated Press, four people have died.
