Ghana’s ex-leader John Mahama to run in 2020 presidential vote

Ghana’s former president John Dramani Mahama has declared his intention to run in the country’s 2020 presidential elections.

Mahama, 59, was defeated by incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 vote, where he was seeking a second consecutive term.

In a broadcast on Accra-based Citi FM, the former head of state said he would seek the National Democratic Congress’ nomination at the party’s leadership summit scheduled for December.

“I’ve taken into consideration the groundswell of support and the never-ending calls and encouragement from a large section of our party elders and Ghanaians of diverse backgrounds,” he said.

“I have submitted my letter to the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) confirming my decision to contest for the leadership of the party with a clear view on victory in 2020, with your support,” he said in a message posted on his official social media accounts.

If he is successful in his quest to get the NDC’s nomination, Mahama will face Akufo-Addo for the presidency for third time.
