Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Anan passed away on Saturday morning aged 80, following a short illness.

The death of the renowned Ghanaian diplomat shocked the world, as leaders from all corners of the globe mourned his demise.

Anan was born on 8 April 1938 in Kamasi, Ghana.

He served as UN Secretary-General for two consecutive five-year terms, beginning in January 1997.
