The Ugandan government announced Wednesday that Kyadondo East Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, will face the Army Court Martial on Thursday.
He’s accused of treason and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Bobi Wine was arrested along with other legislators and opposition supporters after police accused them of attacking president Yoweri Museveni’s convoy on Monday. Police in Arua reportedly recovered two submachine guns and a pistol from Bobi Wine and Arua Municipality MP-elect, Kassiano Wadri
Some of the other detained MPs, including Gerald Karuhanga (Ntungamo Municipality), Paul Mwiru (Jinja East), Michael Mabikke (former Makindye West MP) and Wadri are expected to be charged today with yet-to-be known offences.
Their arrest, just as that of 28 other persons, followed the alleged stoning of one of the vehicles used in President Museveni’s convoy.
Human rights activists have long accused Uganda President Yoweri Museveni’s government of using tactics including arrests and beatings by security forces to stifle opposition to his rule.
Opposition leaders say Mr. Ssentamu and several others were severely beaten following Monday’s incident.
The latest accusations of brutality against the Museveni government came as images of a beaten and bruised Ugandan legislator Francis Zaake emerged on social media.
Officials reject those accusations and say Museveni’s rule is based on mass support.
However, Deputy Prime Minister Moses Ali acknowledged Ssentamu is receiving treatment at a military hospital in the Northern Uganda town of Gulu.
