The United Arab Emirates has lauded the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea for their “bold and historic” steps taken towards restoring peace in the Horn of African region.
Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan hosted the two leaders on Tuesday for a tripartite summit, during which he conferred the Order of Zayed to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki.
Bin Zayed said the world can learn from Ethiopia and Eritrea’s way of resolving conflict.
“The bold & historic step taken by the leaders of the two neighbouring countries to end the conflict and open new horizons for cooperation and joint coordination is a model that can be followed in resolving conflicts around the world,” he said via his official Twitter account.

Ethiopian and Eritrean leaders agreed earlier this month to end the conflict that had put their two countries at loggerheads for over a decade. They resumed diplomatic ties and even opened embassies in Asmara and Addis Ababa to further boost cooperation.
Following the peaceful negotiations, Ethiopian Airlines begun flights to Asmara, and the two nations agreed to stage a friendly football match next month.
The Abu Dhabi Crown Prince said he was “confident that this step will contribute to further cooperation and joint coordination between the neighbours and fulfil their people’s aspirations for peace, development & prosperity, as well as enhance security & stability in the Horn of Africa & the wider region.”
