CAF bans Kenyan referee Aden Marwa for life

Referee Aden Marwa, banned for life from African football by CAF.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has banned for life the Kenyan referee who was caught on camera by Ghanaian undercover journalist, Anas Aremayaw Anas accepting a “money gift”.

CAF published a list of 11 referees, including Aden Marwa, who it has banned, but only the Kenyan was handed a life-long veto. The other ten received bans ranging from 2 years to 10 years.

Marwa had been chosen by world football governing body FIFA to be part of the referees that would officiate World Cup matches in Russia, but the release of the video, just a week before the games begun meant he was dropped.

He has however denied any wrong-doing in response to the corruption allegations.

CAF’s decision came after a meeting held by its disciplinary board.

In a press statement seen by CGTN, the body also suspended a further 11 officials provisionally pending their appearance in front of the Disciplinary Board on 5th August 2018.

Last month, former Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi resigned as CAF’s first vice-president over corruption allegations.

He branded the video footage of him apparently taking cash gifts “lies”.
