German nurse abducted in Mogadishu by unknown gunmen

A German nurse working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was on Wednesday kidnapped in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, the aid group said.

ICRC said the nurse was seized by unknown gunmen from inside the group’s compound at about 1700GMT (8PM local time).

The kidnap has prompted the ICRC to evacuate the remaining 10 international staff to Nairobi until further notice.

In another incident in Mogadishu, a Somali woman working for the World Health Organization was shot dead by gunmen on Tuesday.

A relative of the woman, identified as Maryan Abdullahi, said she was targeted while at a market to buy items in preparation for her wedding next week.

There is no suggestion her killing and the abduction are linked.

Somalia has been dogged by a decade-long jihadist insurgency that had killed tens of thousands including aid workers deployed to offer humanitarian services to those affected by the war.

“We are deeply concerned about the safety of our colleague,” the ICRC’s deputy head of delegation for Somalia Daniel O’Malley said in a statement.

“She is a nurse who was working every day to save lives and improve the health of some of Somalia’s most vulnerable people.”

A police hunt for the nurse is under way. It is not known who is behind the kidnapping.
