The Confederations of African Football (CAF) President Ahmad Ahmad has congratulated Liverpool’s Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah for winning the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year for the 2017/18 season.
“Salah has really made Africa proud. As the reigning African Player of the Year, he has proven that African players have the ability to rub shoulders with the best in the world. The African football family is proud of Salah’s achievement as a true son of the soil,” Ahmad said.
Salah was crowned the Premier League’s best on Sunday night in London, becoming the first African player to win the award.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed an incredible debut season with the Merseyside club, having joined from Italian side AS Roma in the summer.
Salah has scored 41 goals in all competitions, including 31 goals in the Premier League. He leads the scorers chart in England, and is five goals ahead of second placed Harry Kane.
His feat means he is at par with Cristiano Ronaldo, Alan Shearer and Luis Suarez as the only players to have scored 31 Premier League goals in a single season. With four more games to go, he could set a new record should he find the back of the net again.
President Ahmad praised Salah as being a role model to Africa’s youth.
“His unrivalled commitment to both club and country makes him a role model to the youth across the continent and beyond. We wish him the best in his future endeavours,” he said.
Salah will be hoping to help his side lift the Champions League trophy, having led them to the semi-final stage where they meet his former side Roma.
