United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has congratulated Julius Maada Bio on his final victory in Sierra Leone’s run-off election as the country’s new president, according to UN Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.

While addressing the media on Thursday, Stéphane Dujarric said António Guterres applauded the peaceful manner and successful outcome which were contributed by all the candidates and people during the electoral process. He also commended the efforts of the national, regional and international electoral observation teams as well as those of his “Special Representative for West Africa” and the Sahel, Mohammed Ibn Chambas.”

“The Secretary-General reiterates the support of the United Nations to the new Government in consolidating peace and pursuing sustainable development,” the Spokesman concluded.

Julius Maada Bio was sworn in after winning the run-off election following a fruitless first round, in which no one candidate got an outright win with more than 55 per cent of the ballot required by constitution.
