Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged his Zimbabwean counterpart to join him in working towards a new chapter in the two countries’ relationship.

Mnangagwa is in Beijing for a state visit, only his second trip outside Africa since he took power in November 2017.

“I’m willing to work with Mr President to jointly map out our future cooperation and write a new chapter in China-Zimbabwe relations for the benefit of our two peoples,” Xi said during the two leaders’ meeting in Beijing.

Xi also said China has been happy to see the economic reform policies that Mnangagwa put in place after the “peaceful, smooth” transfer of power.

After being sworn in, Mnangagwa vowed to rebuild his country’s ravaged economy and re-engage with the international community.

Under Robert Mugabe’s rule, Zimbabwe’s relationship with some countries, especially the West, was tattered.

Mnangagwa on his part said that Zimbabwe appreciated China’s political support and goodwill and thanked Xi for sending an envoy immediately upon his inauguration.

“That was a great honour,” he said.

Mnangagwa’s visit it expected to focus on acquisition of financial aid, technical assistance and modern technology in quest to revive the country’s frail economy.
