Joel Matip out for rest of the season
Liverpool’s Cameroonian defender Joel Matip is set to miss the rest of the Premier League season after he sustained a thigh injury that might require him to undergo an operation.
The 26-year-old suffered the injury in the Kop’s win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, though he managed to play the entire game.
A statement released by Liverpool said “the operation is likely to end” Matip’s “involvement in the remainder” of the campaign.
Matip has featured in 25 games for Liverpool this season, scoring once. In that period, Liverpool won 16 times and lost only thrice.
The Kop play Manchester City on Wednesday in the quarted final stage of the Champions League, before heading to local rivals Everton on Saturday.
Liverpool still have six games to go in the Premier League, currently lying third with 66 points.
Matip’s injury stretches Jurgen Klopp’s defense further, after losing Joe Gomez during the international break, where he suffered an ankle injury while playing for England.
