
World leaders congratulate Abiy for appointment as new Ethiopian PM

Ethiopia has a new Prime Minister.
The country’s Parliament on Monday appointed the Chairman of the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), Abiy Ahmed, as the new prime minister, replacing Hailemariam Desalegn.
Desalegn resigned in mid-February after sustained protests rocked the country, mainly in the central and northern regions.
Following Abiy’s appointment as Prime Minister, world leaders sent their congratulatory messages, wishing him well I his reign.

Following his swearing in, Abiy praised the peaceful transfer of power, terming the day historic.
“Today is a historic day. We bear witness to a peaceful transfer of power. Today our situation presents us with opportunities and threats. Today we are in the midst of uncertain times,” he said.
The EPRDF party has been in power since 1991, when it took over from the Derg military regime.
