Kenyan university lecturers have called off their strike which had paralysed learning in public universities for nearly three months.
The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) entered into a Return-to-Work Agreement on Thursday evening.
In the return-to-work formula, both parties agreed that no lecturer would be victimised or subjected to disciplinary action over the strike which had been declared illegal by the court.
Some universities had already begun issuing suspension letters to dons who defied orders to resume duty.
The unions also agreed to withdraw all court cases pertaining to the strike.
As part of the agreement, universities are set to adjust semester dates to make up for the time lost since March 1, 2018 when the industrial action began in all 31 public universities.
“Where applicable, the universities’ management shall adjust semester dates as appropriate and practical to compensate learners for the lost time,” reads part of the agreement.
“IPUCCF will continue following up with the government the outstanding employer pension component for the Collective Bargaining Agreements for the Financial Years 2010-2013 and 2013-2017.”
