Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwenda has confirmed that Morocco has requested Kenya to support its bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The North African nation is up against a joint bid from the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and will know its fate in a FIFA congress scheduled for June.
Should Morocco’s bid carry the day, the country will become only the second African side to host the coveted tournament after South Africa in 2010.
Speaking to CGTN, FKF president Nick Mwendwa confirmed that the body had received Morocco’s plea, but went just short of confirming Kenya would support the African bid.
He however admitted to wanting Africa to host another World Cup.
“I am not allowed to say now, with the new rules, but I can tell you this; Morocco has tried three times. They have asked us for the vote. The Americans I know will come. For me, I would say why not have it in Africa. They tried three times, they have failed. Why can’t we have it now? But you know we still have a long time to go,” Mwendwa said.
Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened action against countries that vote against the joint bid.
FIFA however cautioned against any political interference in the process, threatening action against any side that does so.
