Attackers armed with guns and knives struck a mosque outside the South African city of Durban on Thursday, stabbing to death a priest and seriously injuring two others.

A spokesman for a private medical rescue service told AFP the imam, who had his throat slit, died on the way to the hospital.

Rusa head Prem Balram said, when he arrived on the scene, he found two other victims outside with their throats slit.

“They were in a critical condition and bleeding profusely,” he said.

Police say the suspects, believed to be three Egyptian nationals, also set fire to several rooms before fleeing the scene in a white Hyundai Getz.

“The motive of the attack on the three men is unknown at this time.
