Kenya: Right’s group condemns police salary cuts

A Kenyan human rights organization has condemned the reduction of salaries of police officers, saying the move will bear negative consequences.

The Kenya National Commission for Human Rights (KNHCR) says the move by the National Police Service (NPS) could jeopardise security in the East African country.

“This is a decision that portends far reaching and negative consequences to the country, bearing in mind these same officers are the custodians of our national security,” local Standard newspaper quotes KNHCR chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori.

NPS had been reported to have reversed salary increments for police officers who had acquired additional qualifications and abolished tax exemptions for disabled officers.

According to KNHCR, the decision is an infringement of the police officers’ rights, and will have negative effects on their morale, as well as undo reforms that had gained momentum within the service.

“We deem this action by the National Police Service Commission as a violation of the police officers’ economic and social rights and in contravention of Article 41 of the Constitution on labour rights and the International Labour Organization Convention 95 on the Protection of Wages,” Mbogori said.

Following the move by NPS, some officers had begun resigning from the service, reports Daily Nation.
