Source: Angola prosecutors charge ex-central bank governor in $500 million fraud case
Angolan Prosecutors have charged former Central Bank governor Valter Filipe da Silva in relation to an alleged US$ 500 million fraud attempted against the government in 2017, Reuters reports quoting an anonymous source.
The news has been trending in the southern African country, though the prosecutor’s office had not responded to requests for comment by the time of this article’s publication.
Valter becomes the latest high profile figure to be investigated since President Joao Lourenco took power in September 2017.
In December, Angola’s state oil company announced that it was launching an investigation into “possible misappropriation” of funds by former chief executive Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
Isabel was appointed to the position by her father in 2016, but was replaced last month, just a few weeks after new president Joao Laurenco took office.
Lourenco also made changes to top government and military positions upon taking office, a move many saw as a way to shake off former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos influence in the state.
Dos Santos ruled the country for 38 years.
