“We’re watching you”: President Mnangagwa warns Mugabe

Read < 1 minute

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned former president Robert Mugabe following reports of the former leader linked to a new political party.

Speaking to a ZANU-PF youth league national assembly in Harare this week, Mnangagwa said that he was “unhappy” about the latest developments, whereby Mugabe is being accused of backing the National Patriotic Front (NPF) – led by former cabinet minister and ally Ambrose Mutinhiri, the News24 reports.

Mutinhiri’s abrupt resignation from ZANU-PF last week followed by his surprise announcement that he would be the presidential candidate of the new party exposed deep divisions in the governing party, AFP reports.

Mnangagwa said that Mugabe is under investigation.

Mnangagwa said that his government was “examining” the facts and would take the necessary measures once the investigations were concluded.

“…Currently we see in the media various speculations about his (Mugabe’s) activities. I have no doubt that in no time the facts and reality will be made known… We only take position when the realities and the issues are known and it’s factual.

Mugabe is reported to be in South Africa but the reason for his visit is yet to be known.

Mugabe was forced to quit last year when military took over, paving way for Emmerson Mnangagwa.
