Liberian President George Weah has backed Nigeria to give winning the FIFA World Cup a shot in the world competition scheduled to begin in Russia on June 14.

Weah, a football legend himself, made the remarks during a visit to Abuja earlier this week.

“Nigeria team is modern. We all followed them. I have played with great Nigerian players. I have played against them. Now you have a new generation. The fact that they qualify is a good thing for Nigeria. But I hope that they will prepare very early because they are going to represent Africa and we will be there to watch them for them to bring the trophy home for the first time if it’s possible.”

Nigeria is one of five teams that will represent Africa in the games, hoping to bring the trophy home for the first time ever.

The other teams are Egypt, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia.

The Super Eagles booked their ticket to the games after topping their qualification group, which also had the reigning African champions Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia.

Weah in his remarks said that a win for any African country in Russia will be a win for the entire continent.

“I want every African government to know, if you win the world cup, it’s a pride for Africa,” he said.

Nigeria will open their campaign against Croatia on 16 June at the Kaliningrad Stadium, Kaliningrad.
