Kenya’s Attorney General Githu Muigai resigned on Tuesday, but did not give any reason for his move.

Muigai has served in the position for six years, having been appointed in 2011.

President Uhuru Kenyatta confirmed that he had received the 58-year-old’s resignation and thanked him for his service.

“Fellow Kenyans I have today the 13th of February 2018, received with regret the resignation of Professor Githu Muigai from the office of Attorney General effective the date of the appointment of his successor,” he said in a statement.

Muigai leaves office at a time when the East African nation has endured lengthy court battles from the presidential election.

Kenya held its general election on 8 August 2017, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declaring Uhuru Kenyatta winner of the presidency.

The country’s Supreme Court however annulled that win and ordered a repeat, which was conducted on 26 October.

Main opposition leader Raila Odinga boycotted that election repeat, which Kenyatta won with over 98 per cent.

A petition was launched to the Supreme Court again, but this time it upheld Kenyatta’s win.

With the NASA opposition coalition dissatisfied with the developments, Raila Odinga staged a mock swearing in on January 30.

Muigai had warned Odinga against such a move, terming it treason.

The state has however not laid any charges against the opposition leader.
