CHAN 2018: Troubled Libya seeks second CHAN trophy
Libya is a step closer to its second African Nations Championship (CHAN) trophy, after beating Congo-Brazzaville in the quarter final stage of the tournament in Morocco.
The troubled North African nation beat the Central African side on penalties after drawing 1-1 after extra time.
Libya won the 2014 edition played in South Africa, and is hoping to make it to the final with a win against the host nation on Wednesday.
Morocco made it to the semi-finals after beating Namibia, and is playing for a first CHAN trophy.
Should the host nation win the competition, it will become the third North African side to win the continental trophy after Libya and Tunisia.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is the only other country that has won the competition, boasting of a win in the inaugural edition in 2009 and in 2016.
The trophy would serve as a welcome source of joy for Libya, which has been dogged by war since the 2011 ouster and killing of long-serving leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Different militant factions arose in the country after Gaddafi’s death, taking advantage of the political void created then.
The country has since become a major departure point for migrants seeking to reach Europe.
