Heads of State forum set to begin in Addis Ababa
Heads of State are gathered in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, for the 30th African Union Summit.
The leaders will today gather at the AU headquarters for the two-day Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU.
The title of this year’s theme is Winning the fight against corruption: A sustainable path to Africa’s Transformation.
The agenda of the Heads of State’s talks are expected to be dominated by terrorism, food security and corruption.
South Sudan will take center stage as a December peace deal signed between the country’s warring factions has continuously been violated.
IGAD, AU and the UN held a meeting on the sidelines of the Summit to seek ways to ensure the peace deal is adhered to.
The three bodies in a joint statement said they had agreed to take punitive measures against violators of the peace deal.
Among the leaders present in Addis for the talks include Muhammadu Buhari (Nigeria), Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Jacob Zuma (South Africa), Hage Geingob (Namibia), Abdel Fattah al-Sisi (Egypt), Mohamed Abdulahi (Somalia) and Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe).
