Sudan’s al-Bashir heads to Addis Ababa for AU Summit

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is set to travel to Addis Ababa for the 30th African Union Summit, official SUNA news agency reported Friday.
Al-Bashir will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including minister for Presidency Fadl Abdalla Fadl, Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity Mutaz Mussa, Minister of Trade Hatim Al-Sir, Minister of Welfare and Social Security Mashir Al-Dawalab, Chief of National Intelligence and Security Services Mohamed Atta al-Moula Abbas, and State Minister at the Presidency and Director of the President’s Offices Hatim Hassan Bakheet.
The Ethiopia visit will be al-Bashi’s first international trip since the turn of the year.
The 74-year-old is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for five counts of crimes against humanity, murder, extermination, forcible transfer of people, torture and rape.
He is also sought to answer to two counts of war crimes allegedly committed between 2003 and 2008 in Darfur.
Many other Presidents are already in Addis Ababa for the Summit, including Muhammadu Buhari (Nigeria), Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Jacob Zuma (South Africa) and Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe).
The AU summit, which has started preparatory meetings at levels of permanent representatives and foreign ministers, will this year focus on issues relating to corruption, illegal immigration, terrorism, human trafficking, peace and security in Africa, and AU structural reforms.
