Tributes pour in following death of veteran South African actor “Bra Eddie”

Veteran South African actor Sandy Mokwena best known as Bra Eddie Khumalo in the e.tv soapie Scandal! died on Wednesday night after being admitted to hospital earlier this week.

Condolences have been pouring in from South Africans to the friends, family and television industry colleagues including the country’s Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, colleagues of veteran actor Sandy Mokwena, who has sadly passed on,” said Minister Mthethwa.

Mokwena, 68, died in hospital of natural causes on Wednesday night, media reports and this was also confirmed by Michael Pocock, e.tv publicist.

“e.tv is deeply saddened by the news and our condolences go out to Sandy’s family and the cast and crew of Scandal!, “Pocock added.

Bra Eddie as he was known on TV soapie, Scandal also played roles in Generations, Soul City and Yizo Yizo. He has been on the show since it premiered on e.tv 13 years ago.

Filming of the soap Scandal! was cancelled on Thursday following the news of his passing.

According to TVSA, Mokwena starred in several feature films including Taxi to Soweto (1992), The Principal (1996), Dead End (1999) and Scarback (2000).

His death comes just few days after the death of South Africa’s father of Jazz music Hugh Masekela after a battle with prostate cancer on Tuesday.
