Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday submitted his nomination documents to the country’s electoral authority.

Al-Sisi went through a medical test on Tuesday, an official requirement for candidates eyeing the presidency.

The North African country’s presidential election will take place on March 26-28, with a runoff to be held from April 24-26 if needed.

Egypt’s national election commission said the results would be announced on 2 April. In the event of a runoff if no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote, the results would be announced on 1 May.

Al-Sisi is the sixth president of Egypt, and has been in office since June 2014.

The 63-year-old, a former Minister of Defence and Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces, led the military coup that removed former President Mohamed Morsi from office on 3 July 2013, in response to June 2013 Egyptian protests.

Analysts project an easy ride for al-Sisi, following withdrawals by some challengers, with others being barred from contesting.

The latest to be barred from the race was a former Egyptian army chief of staff, Sami Annan, who was accused by the military of forging documents.

The national elections committee said it would publish a list of candidates on 31 January.
