British rancher trampled to death by elephant in Kenya

Read < 1 minute

A British rancher was on Wednesday trampled to death by an elephant in Kenya’s Laikipia district, local Citizen TV reports.

Gilfred Powys’ death was confirmed by Laikipia police commander Simon Kipkeu as well as wildlife authorities.

“One of the elephants charged and trampled him to death,” Kipkeu said.

His family is reported to have ties to Laikipia since the 1920s, when one of his forefathers moved there to rear sheep.

Powys is said to have publicly called for unity within Laikipia in the run up to the country’s general election on August 8.
