Swahili Fashion Week 2017
The fashion fraternity across Africa descended on Dar es Salaam for the 10 edition of the popular Swahili Fashion Week.
Swahili Fashion Week is the biggest annual fashion event in the whole of East and Central Africa. It provides a platform for fashion and accessory designers from Swahili speaking countries and beyond to showcase their talent, market their creativity and network with the international fashion industry.
As part of the growth and expansion of this event, this year’s show featured emerging designers’ and held a competition featuring finalists who were selected by an independent panel of judges.
These included Agnes Sixbeabeatus, Anjali Borkhataria, Charity Nyaimaga, Edina Emmanuel, Emmanuel Kisusi, Gisela Kaguo, Jackline Ottaru, Liberatha Alibalio, Mary Immaculate Gervace, and Mohammed Juma.
Swahili Fashion week emphasizes the fact that fashion is an income generating part of the creative industry, while promoting the ” Made in Africa” concept. 2017 marked the tenth anniversary of the Annual Event.
For the first time,The overall Prize winner was a shared accolade as Emmanuel Kisusi and Maryimmaculate Gervace emerged winners. Shahbaz Sayed won the award last year.
Over 30 local and 13 established international designers the whole place was abuzz with activity, as models graced the catwalk to showcase some of the collections on offer.
In the name of diversity, plus size women too were celebrated for the first time in an industry that has in the past drawn criticism for its inclination for the size zero models.
