Read < 1 minute

A train derailed onto a motorway in Washington state on Monday evening, causing “multiple” fatalities, police say.

The incident happened near DuPont, which is southwest of Tacoma.

The train was travelling at more than 130kmh, and had at least 75 people on board.

Its carriages plummeted on the motorway, with at least one of them halting in an upside down position on the highway.

Pierce County Sheriff’s department said several cars were struck by the derailed carriages.

The police say there are fatalities, though there has been no specific number reported. Some people are still trapped inside the train.
