AU mission launches campaign to eradicate violence against women in Somalia
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Saturday launched the ‘16 Days Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign, aimed at eradicating violence against women and girls in the country.
The campaign, launched by the AU Mission simultaneously in Somalia’s regional capitals, is part of a global campaign to create awareness about some of the most widespread human rights violations.
The global theme of the campaign this year is “Leave No One Behind – End Violence Against Women And Girls”.
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world will never tackle poverty unless the international community eradicates violence against women.
In his message on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Guterres urged the world to take action to end violence against women for good.
“It is time to further our collective action to end violence against women and girls for good,” he said marking the Day, which on 25 November, highlights that around the world, more than 1 in 3 women in their lives have experienced physical violence, sexual violence, or both.
