Chinese President on Saturday sent his message of condolence to his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi following Friday’s deadly attack that killed at least 235 people and injured more than 100 others.

In the message, Xi offered his deep condolences to the victims and sincere sympathy to President Sisi, the families of the victims and the injured.

“China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns the attack,” Xi said.

“China is steadfast in supporting Egypt’s efforts in fighting against terrorism and safeguarding its national security and stability,” the message added.

The attack was carried out against worshippers at the al-Rawda mosque in the northern Sinai region.

Gunmen in four off-road vehicles are reported to have opened fire at worshippers after the blast.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack so far.

Egypt has for years been battling an armed movement in the rugged and thinly populated Sinai Peninsula, which gained pace since the 2013 military ouster of the then president Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.
