
World marks Int’l Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women
November 25 is a day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The day marks the beginning of the #16Days of Activism to end violence against women and girls. The global campaign runs until Human Rights Day on 10 December.
According to the UN, one in every three women have experienced violence in their lifetime.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is aimed at raising awareness to the fact that women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence.
Violence against women and girls is a grave violation of human rights. Its impact ranges from immediate to long-term multiple physical, sexual and mental consequences for women and girls, including death.
Contrary to what many think, violence against women affects even women in higher social classes. 82 percent of women parliamentarians who participated in a study conducted by the Inter-parliamentary Union in 39 countries across 5 regions reported having experienced some form of psychological violence while serving their terms.
Twenty-three per cent of female undergraduate university students reported having experienced sexual assault or sexual misconduct in a survey across 27 universities in the United States in 2015.
November 25 aims to address this challenge faced my millions of women around the world by highlighting that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden.
