Burundi’s government has taken first steps in extending President Pierre Nkurunziza’s rule.
The country’s cabinet has adopted a draft legislation seeking to amend the constitution, potentially allowing President Pierre Nkurunziza to rule up to 2034, Reuters reports a senior government official to have said on Friday.
Nkurunziza is on a controversial third mandate, which sparked chaos in April 2015.
Following his declaration that he would run for a third term, one which he went on to win in the July 2015 poll, chaos erupted in Burundi, killing hundreds and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes.
According to Reuter’s source, the draft legislation was adopted on Tuesday.
This latest move comes on the back of the country’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court on Friday, becoming the first country to do so.
