Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has said that the Liberty Party (LP) has called for a repeat of the presidential vote, saying it was marred by irregularities.

The LP candidate Charles Brumskine finished third in the October 10 presidential vote.

The first two candidates, former football superstar George Weah and vice president Joseph Boakai are set to compete in a second round, having failed to garner over 50 percent of the votes cast, required to declare a winner.

The rerun is scheduled for Novermber.

“Any party or candidate who complains about the manner in which the elections were conducted or who challenges the results thereof shall have the right to file a complaint with the Elections Commission. Such complaint must be filed not later than seven days after the announcement of the results of the elections,” Brumskine said.

He said that thousands of Liberians had been denied a right to vote in the election.

“It is such a sad thing for us as Liberians, thousands and thousands of Liberians have been denied their constitutional rights to vote.”

The country is seeking a replacement for Africa’s first elected female president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who has served her two terms.
