Kenyan opposition NASA coalition’s supporters are gathering in the capital, Nairobi, ahead of a ‘big announcement’ promised by Raila Odinga last week.
Uncertainty has gripped the East African country for the better part of October, ahead of a repeat presidential election slated for tomorrow.
NASA coalition, under Raila Odinga’s leadership, has asked its supporters not to take part in the vote, which the veteran politician announced he would not take part in.
The opposition’s boycott is meant to protest a lack of reforms at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The opposition has been demanding changes at the body, particularly the resignation of some officials it accuses of engaging in malpractises that led to the nullification of the August 8 poll.
Raila last week urged his supporters to wait for a ‘big announcement’ from him today, just a few hours before the polls open.
Some rights groups have urged IEBC to postpone the elections, even filing a case before the Supreme Court to that effect.
The Court was scheduled to make a ruling today, but failed to do so after only one judge appeared. A quorum is needed for any Supreme Court decisions to take effect, meaning at least five of the eight judges have to be in sitting.
The ruling Jubilee Party is however adamant the election will go on as planned, with or without Odinga’s name on the ballot.
