Kenyan betting giant Sportpesa – the main shirt sponsor of English football club Everton – was forced to make an apology to the club and its followers after posting a Twitter message praising Arsenal for their win over the Toffees on Saturday.

The match ended 5-2 in favour of the Gunners – who are also in a betting partnership with Sportpesa – marking the end of Ronald Koeman’s era as Everton’s manager.

After that game, Sportpesa sent out a tweet that read: “Well in #Gunners! A superb gift by the players for the birthday gaffer!”

Already fuming after another loss, Everton fans took to the social site to castigate Sportpesa for their tweet which was then deleted moments later.

The Kenyan firm then issued an apology to the club and the fans, saying the tweet should never have gone public.

“We are not going to hide behind excuses. We have to be honest in admitting that the tweet you saw yesterday should never have gone out and we are deeply sorry for any offence this has caused,” the apology read.

Everton currently lie in the relegation zone with eight points from nine games, having shipped in 18 goals already.

Koeman was sacked on Monday, and was replaced by the club’s U23s manager David Unsworth.
