A Tanzanian opposition Member of Parliament who was shot and critically injured in September has been taken out of intensive care, his party CHADEMA said on Tuesday.

MP Tundu Lissu was shot in by unknown assailants in Dodoma on September 7, before being rushed to hospital.

CHADEMA said he had been transferred to Nairobi, where he underwent 17 operations.

The party’s chief Freeman Mbowe told journalists in Dar es Salaam that Lissu was now able to eat and sit up without help, and no longer required respiratory support.

He also said that Lissu would still receive further treatment outside Nairobi, without giving further details for what he said were security reasons.

Party officials said Lissu had previously complained about of being “tailed” by a car and repeatedly said he feared assassination.

The politician has been arrested around six times this year alone, and has been at loggerheads with the government for accusations of insulting the president.

Tanzanian police said they were investigating the attack.
