Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will on Wednesday depart for Turkey, to participate in the ninth Summit of the Developing 8 (D-8) on Friday, October 20.
The president’s spokesperson Femi Adesina in a statement on Tuesday confirmed the trip, saying that the 74-year-old had also received an invitation from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for an official visit to the capital, Ankara.
While in Ankara, the two leaders will engage in talks on various issues including defence cooperation, security, educational and migration.
President Buhari will also have an opportunity to visit the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey in Ankara, where he will meet with the Speaker, Ismail Kahraman.
The Nigerian leader will use the D-8 Summit as a platform to bolster growing ties with other members namely Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan and Turkey.
Adesina’s statement said the Summit with the theme, ‘‘Expanding Opportunities through Cooperation’’, will among other things, focus on cooperation in the areas of agriculture, trade, transport, energy and increased private sector participation among member-countries.
At the end of the Summit, the Heads of State and Government will adopt a Communiqué, also known as the ‘Istanbul Declaration’.
