Nigeria has started taking steps to stop doctors in public service from engaging in private practice.

Minister of health Isaac Adewole told journalists in the capital, Abuja, that a technical committee had been set up to review a report on the health sector.

The report was the outcome of a panel set up by former President Goodluck Jonathan to look into “unhealthy rivalries” among healthcare professionals, reports the local online medium Premium Times.

A member of the committee, Yayale Ahmed, said “the law of the land does not allow any public officer to do anything other than farming, so the committee would make appropriate recommendation to government on this important issue which is of considerable interest to quite a number of Nigerians.”

The government has been having a running battle with health workers over wage dispute and improved working conditions.
