Zimbabwe domestic workers form WhatsApp Group amid pay crisis

Read < 1 minute

Domestic Workers in Zimbabwe have formed a WhatsApp group to give them a platform to share experiences and challenges they face amid the on-going economic crisis.

Employers in the Southern African nation have resorted to paying the domestic workers via mobile money transfers, AllAfrica.com reports.

The domestic workers are said to be against this as the transactions attract heavy charges from the mobile service providers, thus eating up on their earnings.

Founder of Domestic Workers Association of Zimbabwe Mendy Lusaba said this only makes a difficult situation worse because the domestic workers’ pay is low to begin with.

“Imagine if a domestic worker is paid $50 and the mobile money agency demands 20% of that amount. What will be left?” AllAfrica.com quotes her to say.

She added that some of the workers go for moths without pay.

“Some of these domestic workers are even going for months without being paid because the employers’ excuse is that, all is not well in the economy or they are not getting paid at their [own] workplace.”

Lusaba said that the domestic workers have now formed a WhatsApp group to enable the workers open up about their experiences, in order to help in finding solutions.
