Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is in Panama for a historic visit that marks the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Wang met Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela on Saturday, after which both leaders said the ties will bring mutual benefit to both China and Panama.

The Chinese FM on Sunday inaugurated China’s embassy in Panama, officially stamping the ‘One China’ principle in the Central American nation.

The two nations signed a joined communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations.

According to the communique, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Panama, in keeping with the interests and desire of the two peoples, have decided to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level effective from the date of signature of this communique.

Wang praised the newly developed ties, saying China would treasure it.

“Chinese government and Chinese people welcome Panama’s decision to establish diplomatic relations with China,” said Wang.

“Panama is an important country in Latin America. Chinese people always treasure the friendship with the Panamanian people,” he added.
