The Chinese government in collaboration with the Confucius Institute has offered some 100 Cameroonian students scholarships to study in China, starting in the 2017/2018 academic year.

The first batch of beneficiaries of the scholarships is expected to travel to China soon to begin their studies.

People’s daily reports a source from the Cameroon Embassy to say that undergraduate students will study Chinese language for a year before beginning their main courses, while postgraduate students who will study in English will start right away upon arrival in the country.

A farewell ceremony for the students was held in the Chinese Embassy in Cameroon in the capital, Yaounde, in the presence of Ambassador Wei Wenhua and Cameroon’s Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo.

“China is a great nation, and the world’s second largest economy. We expect much from our young students who are going to study there, and hope that when they complete their studies, they will return home with certificates, skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of our nation,” Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo said.

“The scholarships cover almost all sectors such as agriculture, education, medicine, technology, etc. Cooperation between Cameroon and China in education is going on well. Each year, the Chinese government offers about 30 scholarships to Cameroonians, in addition to those by Confucius Institute,” Ambassador Wei Wenhua noted.

According to Wei Wenhua, more than 300 Cameroonians last year travelled to China to take part in various training sessions, including 77 recipients of Chinese government and Confucius Institute scholarships.
