Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has just marked his 100th day absent from office, having embarked on a medical trip to treat an unknown condition in London.

Away from Nigeria since May 7, where he left for the second round of overseas treatment, President Buhari handed power to his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who has since become the Acting President.

Due to the current situation, both President Buhari and Acting President Osinbajo have broken international records. Buhari for being the first incumbent head of state to have spent an extended number of days outside his domain, and Osinbajo for being the first Acting President to hit 100 days in office.

Buhari’s Medical Leave

At the start of 2017, President Buhari left for London on a “medical vacation”, and in February he asked parliament to extend his medical leave. With speculation building up on the health of Buhari and whether he was fit to serve – he returned to Nigeria in March, but not immediately to work.

Shortly after his first medical vacation, Buhari was escorted back to London in May for further treatment on an undisclosed condition. Once again, speculation was circling Buhari’s leave and whether he would return – Aisha Buhari attempted to quash rumours by saying that her husband was “recuperating fast”.

But with this latest 100-day milestone reached, it will continue to fuel the thinking of those doubters that don’t believe Buhari is in a state of health to govern the country.
