Former United States President Barack Obama has urged the leaders of Kenya to respect the will of the people in an article that he has written published in the Kenyan newspaper, Daily Nation.

Obama writes that Kenya must reject politics of tribe and ethnicity and embrace democracy, for the country’s leaders to reject violence and incitement and respect the will of the people. To resolve election disputes peacefully through the rule of law.

The former leader also asks the East African nation’s security forces to act professionally and to be neutral on the election outcome.

Obama reminds Kenyans that, “Kenya has come a long way in the last two decades – undertaking a peaceful transition of power in 2002; and, following the horrific violence around the 2007 election, working hard to recover from crisis and embracing a new Constitution.”
