King of the jungle draws tourists to Kenya’s game parks

Most tourists that visit Africa often have high hopes of getting to see the lion in action.

These big cats are however not easy to find in action, especially during the day.

Most of the hunting done by lions takes place very early in the morning or late in the evening.

The hunting is done almost exclusively by females – in formation – each with a favoured position in the group, like a soccer team.

Often, the males do not go hunting. They wait for the females to make a kill, then they get to eat.

Male lions mainly serve to protect a pack and its territory.

During the great Mara Migration, lions, like many other predators, make a huge kill. They get to eat more often that they do when the migrating animals are far away.

The Great Migration sees over 1.5 million wildebeests, 200,000 zebras and a sizeable number of antelopes and gazelles travelling across Kenya and Tanzania in search of fresh pasture.

Every year during the migration, around 250,000 wildebeests and 30,000 zebras are killed as a result of predation by carnivores, but also from thirst, hunger, and exhaustion.

It is reported that there are more than 3,000 lions that benefit from the Great Migration.
