Chinese contingents in South Sudan feted for their efforts

A ceremony celebrated the efforts by the Chinese peacekeepers from the 15th engineering contingent and the 7th medical contingent of the Chinese peacekeeping force in Wau, South Sudan.

“Today is a very special day for the Sector West, in which two offices, important units both from China, CHN HMEC (Engineering contingent) and level 2 hospital, are to be awarded their honor medals. It is a joy for them, as well as for us all in the sector. Their works in the past ten months have been recognized by UNMISS and the local populous who have benefited immensely,” said Solomon Tei-Mensah Osabutey, sector West Commander, UNMISS.

“Congratulations on the accomplishment of various missions assigned by UNMISS, despite of the difficulties and risks. In the rest 2 months of your post here, I expect you to continue to carry on with the good tradition of Chinese army, and to achieve the final goal,” said Yang Chaoying, Deputy Force Commander of UNMISS.

Since arriving in Wau last September, the Chinese engineering contingent has carried out more than 200 key tasks, including upgrading fortifications, repairing roads and building security walls.

The medical contingent on the other hand has provided medical treatment to more than 3,200 patients, successfully carrying out a series of rescue volunteer operations.

Honorary medals of peace were awarded to all the peacekeepers both contingents getting a collective honor award.
