The government of Malawi will be establishing Malawi Qualifications Authority to regulate and standardize the qualifications awarded by universities and colleges, reports Nyasa Times.

The new authority will assess examinations so that certificates offered are of required standards. It will also facilitate development of an accreditation system for degree certificates awarded by universities and work to eliminate unrecognised and fake certificates.

Malawi Qualifications Authority will will also take up the qualifications tasks being done by the Malawi National Examination board (MANEB), Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Emmanuel Fabiano told the annual Conference of the Southern Africa Association for Education Assessment (SAAEA).

“MANEB will have to live a life of having a competitor over a number of candidates. As government, we believe that the competition will be good for service delivery,” said Fabiano, adding that Maneb has the advantage “to start repositioning” itself before the competitor is born.

The Bill which is before the parliament will have a framework for the recognition and standardisation of qualifications attained in institutions within and outside Malawi.
