CAF symposium to consider AFCON dates change
Changing the dates of the Africa Cup of Nations is a top agenda at a two-day Football Symposium taking place in Morocco.
The timing of the biennial competition has been a contested topic for years now, and was part of Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Ahmad Ahmad’s campaign pledges.
Ahmad pledged to review the current structure of the event in his successful campaign to unseat incumbent Issa Hayatou in March.
Players, coaches andother football officials are due to be in attendance in Rabat.
Notably, FIFA President Gianni Infantino will join the symposium, as well as former players such as Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o and Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha, who will also give their input at the gathering.
AFCON is often hosted in January, a period critics claim provides too much of a disruption to the European club season.
Players have to be released by their clubs to take part in the event, with some reluctant to let their star names travel to Africa to represent their country.
