Uganda’s Ministry of public service has issued a new set of rules on dress code in the workplace.
According to the ministry heavy make-up, long nails are no longer acceptable at the office. Female staff have also been told not to show any cleavage, wear brightly coloured nails, braids or hair extensions, sleeveless or transparent blouses.
The rules, which also include instructions on what men should wear to work, are bound to have many scrambling for a new image that many women in the country cannot afford. The men have been told to always wear long-sleeved shirts, jackets and ties, while trousers should not be tight-fitting.
“We were approached with complaints that, specifically lady officers, were dressing in an unacceptable manner, with mini-skirts and showing body parts which otherwise generally should be covered in Ugandan society,” Ministry of Public Service’s director of Human Resources, Adah Muwangatold the BBC
